Aluminum Scaffold Tower vs. Steel Scaffold Tower

Ever consider the difference between an aluminum scaffold tower vs. steel? Maybe you were unaware there was a difference between the two and how they performed. Or perhaps you never really gave it much thought.

In this article we're going to pull up some stats, lay them out side by side and compare notes. Then we'll take what we've learned and help identify if aluminum is the right choice for your needs.

There are a few key features that should be taken into consideration when choosing aluminum over steel. The overall weight of the scaffold. How sturdy it feels while performing your tasks and it's load capacity.

Keep in mind that I'm only considering free standing scaffolds in this article. This will help us draw a fair assessment between the two. When a scaffold is tied back to a structure it changes it's structural integrity.

First lets take a look at the load rating for each next to their gross weight.

Why a Scaffold Tower

In the span of my life. I've been up and down a scaffold tower ladder more times then I can count.

The list of projects that can be accomplish in the hands of one of these is impressive.

These days it's very common for newer homes to have vaulted or higher then normal ceilings. Ten to fifteen feet seems to be the norm and my home is no different. Aesthetically this is very appealing, but it can have its setbacks when it comes time for cleaning, maintenance or the occasional remodel.

Have you ever tried cleaning a ceiling fan from the top of a ladder? I'm sure most of you will agree its not fun!

Or how about changing out the holiday decor for your wife from the top of something you shouldn't be standing on in the first place. Not exactly safe.

Eventually I swallowed my pride.

I acknowledged I wasn't getting any younger and should probably find a safer, more effective way of approaching my honey-do-list.

So I decided to pick one up and let me say.

All things aside. I can't think of any other purchase I've made that has had this much impact on my work around the house. I can roll it pretty much anywhere I need to in the house and setup shop. Once I start working, everything I need is up there on the deck with me.

Cleaning, painting, changing out decorations. Makes no difference. Whatever I'm into that day. It works. These things really are a game changer.

Here's one below worth looking at.

What is Scaffold Netting?

Scaffold Netting
Scaffold netting is a heavy duty mesh material that is designed to prevent dropped items or debris. It comes on a roll, similar to a roll of replacement screen used for windows. These rolls are typically 4' to 6' x 150' in length.

It's main purpose is to protect those working at ground level. It protects them from tools that might slip from your control or all sorts of falling materials. As long as whatever falls is inside the perimeter of the scaffold deck this netting will stop it from falling to the ground. It's strong enough to sustain a fairly hard hit and still maintain its integrity.

On most job sites OSHA requires that safety netting be installed from the top handrail down to deck level. Especially if you plan on stacking material higher then the top edge of your toe board. This will ensure that anyone working below is protected if something should happen to fall.

My primary source of income is building scaffolds at Nuclear plants and this is a required component for build completion. It's also the last line of defense in dropped item prevention. On site we use Pearlweave.

Why Using a Mobile Scaffold is so Important

Buying a mobile scaffold was hands down, one of the best purchases I've ever made for home improvements and other projects around the house. There are so many great features that positively impacted my decision to do so. Now I only use a ladder on the rare occasion I find a spot that's to tight to fit my scaffold into, but it's very rare.

So why a mobile scaffold over a ladder?

They create a working platform, instead of a step. They're far more stable to work from which makes them safer. It's easier to keep your balance on one then it is a ladder because you can widen your stance giving you more stability.

You have an increased range of motion allowing you to move more freely while working. Anyone who has ever installed a ceiling fan or a new light fixture knows how important this is. Being able to move, twist around or stoop down to grab tools safely is critical. For this reason alone I count scaffolding as a must have.

I think just about all of us at one point in our lives will find ourselves putting up ceiling fans, installing new light fixtures or re-painting a room or two. The list can go on and on. Handling these tasks safely and free from aggravation is a plus.

Here are my three mobile scaffolds that I think are best fit for small projects.
